Pang Ung (ปางอุ๋ง) otherwise known as "Pang Oong" or "Ban Ruam Thai", is in the Mae Hong Son (แม่ฮ่องสอน) province of north Thailand, close to the border with Burma.

Pang Ung is the opposite of the typical image of tropical Thailand, and is sometimes referred to as "Switzerland in Thailand". An evergreen forest of pine trees, interspersed with a few palm trees and bamboo plants, surrounds a beautiful reservoir. The official title is "The Royal Forest Project at Pang Tong 2 (Pang-Ung)".

On cold winter mornings an atmospheric mist rolls across the lake at dawn as local villagers row tourists on bamboo rafts. The temperature can sometimes drop below freezing point. For a few moments at sunrise the mists turn to gold before they evaporate.

Beside the reservoir, Buddhist monks in their orange robes collect alms. Small herds of black and white swans live on the lake here, donated by HM Queen Sirikit.

Pang Ung is a lovely spot to camp. The campsite is right under the pine trees, next to the lake.
